Correspondence concerning health, deaths, children, visits, travels, social news, and other family matters, 1842-1942, primarily among the children of Harriet and Benjamin F. Butler, Benjamin Jr., William A., Margaret B. Crosby, Harriet A. Dwight, Lydia A. Booth, Mary H. Lord, and Eliza (Lizzie) O. Kirkbride. A substantial portion consists of the letters between Lydia and Lizzie prior to their marriages, 1858-1870; there are also Civil War letters written by Franklin B. Crosby. Her husband was director of the Department of Mental Diseases at the Pennsylvania Hospital from 1840 until his death in 1883. Benjamin Franklin Butler was born in Deerfield, New Hampshire, the sixth and youngest child of John Butler and Charlotte Ellison Butler.
